Kids get a taste of success and life after high school
By Laura Howe, education director
This summer the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows added Specialty Camps to the long list of fun options for members. One of the Specialty Camps was Club Kids’ College. This was a four-day camp in which members spent the morning hours on the University of Nevada, Reno campus.
Through Club Kids’ College the members learned about setting goals, the 4 P’s of business through running a lemonade stand, the importance of college, how to save for college, and much more. They were also able to take a tour of campus, visit the student union, Knowledge Center, planetarium and engineering building. We were also lucky enough to have guest speakers every week.
On Thursday of each week the teams ran their own lemonade stands with the knowledge that they gained during the week. Due to the hard work of members, together they raised $872.88! Thanks to the money they have raised the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows will be able to run Club Kids’ College next summer.
We were also able to have a graduation on the University of Nevada, Reno campus where members and families gather to celebrate each member’s contribution to the program.
Club Kids’ College was a huge success. Not only was it successful in raising money for next year, but more importantly it provided new opportunities to members. Members were excited to learn something new each day and this was the first university campus that many of them have visited. We are so excited that we are able to bring this program next summer and make it even bigger and better!
