Volunteers needed for “Read to Me” Program

The Boys & Girls Club Early Learning Program announced a new program called Read to Me. The program focuses on enhancing the reading skills of the youngest members of the Club to improve their ability to achieve in school.

Volunteers will read weekly to four groups of children, ranging in age from 2 to 5. The volunteers will read to children for one hour intervals during the week. It is expected that more than 80 children will be read to each week. Initially, the Assistance League of Reno-Sparks will work in collaboration with Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows and the Washoe County School District to run the program.

The Read to Me Program will be staffed by the Assistance League members/volunteers and will be led by Karen McGee. Ms. McGee formerly taught primary grades (Kindergarten – 3rd grade) for 15 years and she was the Washoe County School District K-6 Language Arts (Reading) Coordinator for 15 years. We are looking for Volunteers to commit to at least one hour a month. Volunteers will be trained and will receive all materials to participate in the program.

“The single most significant factor influencing a child’s early educational success is an introduction to books and being read to at home prior to beginning school,” said McGee.

For more information or to sign up for our next training please contact Brittina or call (775) 322-9030.
