The 55,000-square foot facility to serve 3,000 youth annually

The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows officially opens its new William N. Pennington Facility, May 20 at 11 a.m. The grand opening ceremony includes State of Nevada and City of Reno officials, foundation partners and members of the Club’s board of directors to cut the ribbon and open the doors to the new 55,000-square foot facility located on Foster Drive in Reno. The facility will serve between 3,000 to 4,000 youth annually, an increase of more than 25 percent of the Club’s current membership.

“We are ecstatic to celebrate the opening of this community facility that will provide opportunities and impact the lives of thousands of youth each year,” said Mike Wurm, chief professional officer of the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. “This piece of property on Foster Drive has been serving youth and families for more than 60 years; and we are very happy to bring those services back to the community. This facility has become a reality due to the generosity and partnership of our local foundations, corporations, community members and the City of Reno.”

The new William N. Pennington Facility includes separate areas for teens, tweens and youth with education rooms, computer labs, recreation rooms and art rooms. It houses a commercial-grade kitchen, a cafeteria/multi-purpose room and a four-court gymnasium, as well as a large outdoor play area. The second floor of the building is the home for the new Link Piazzo Non-Profit Center. Big Brothers Big Sisters of Northern Nevada and The Solace Tree are relocating their local headquarters to the new center as of June 1, creating a greater synergy and partnership for resources and referrals between the three organizations.

The Boys & Girls Club summer camp program at the new Pennington Facility starts June 16 and registration is currently open for traditional day camp and specialty camps such as Robotics Camp, Board-N-Blade Camp, Cheerleading Camp, Swim Camp and many more. Starting with the 2014-2015 school year, the site will service various Washoe County schools providing transportation for the Club’s before and after school programs. The Pennington Facility also offers full-day programming for WCSD’s fall, winter and spring breaks and a variety of youth sports activities including Winter Basketball League for Kindergarten through 6th grades.

In addition to the Grand Opening Ceremony, a Community Open House is scheduled for Wednesday, May 21 from 5 – 9 p.m. During the open house attendees can tour the new building and meet the Club’s programming staff. Summer camp program registration and membership orientations are also available.
