Grant from Walmart and Walmart Foundation helps provide more than 50,000 nutritious meals to Club kids during summer break
The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows has received a $65,000 grant from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation as part of the company’s State Giving Program. The grant will be used to help launch and maintain a summer feeding program at the newly opened William N. Pennington Facility. The Club’s summer camp program provides breakfast and lunch for campers, many of whom rely on meals at school during the school year.
“We are very grateful to receive this grant from Walmart and the Walmart Foundation, which will help provide quality meals for hundreds of Club members during the summer camp program,” said Mike Wurm, Executive Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows. “This summer alone we expect to serve more than 50,000 meals from the E. L. Wiegand Kitchen at the new Pennington Facility.”
The grant will be formally presented to the Boys & Girls Club during an event on Tuesday, June 17, at 11:45 a.m. at the club’s William N. Pennington Facility, located at 1300 Foster Drive. This 55,000-square-foot facility opened last month and will serve between 3,000 and 4,000 youth annually.
The Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows is the leading non-profit youth services agency in northern Nevada and serves children ages 0 to 18 in the Truckee Meadows area through afterschool, summer and school break programs and services. Founded in 1976, the Club now serves more than 12,000 children at 20 sites throughout the Truckee Meadows. At all of its sites, the Boys & Girls Club strives to provide kids with positive and productive outlets for their energy with programs such as afterschool tutoring, character and leadership development, healthy lifestyles, athletics and art.
“For many children, summertime means no access to meals that they would normally receive at school,” said Gregg Treadway, Walmart regional general manager. “We are proud to support the work that the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows does to provide nutritious breakfasts and lunches to Reno-area kids.”
The contribution to the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows was made possible through the Walmart Foundation’s Nevada State Giving Program and is one of seven recently awarded grants totaling $455,000 in the state. Through this program, the Walmart Foundation supports organizations that create opportunities so people can live better. The Walmart Foundation State Giving Program strives to award grants that have a long-lasting, positive impact on communities across the U.S. Other Nevada organizations receiving grants include Catholic Charities of Southern Nevada; Community Chest, Inc.; Goodwill Industries of Southern Nevada, Inc.; Street Teens: A Nevada Non-Profit Corporation; Food Bank of Northern Nevada; and Three Square.
In 2013, Walmart, Sam’s Club locations and the Walmart Foundation awarded more than $13.6 million to local organizations in Nevada.
