Showing off their Values

The Boys & Girls Club is more than just a place for kids to have fun and hang out after school. At the Club, members are building character and learning essential skills that will help them grow into responsible, productive adults. One of the ways we teach these concepts is through our Be G.R.E.A.T. Values. Each letter stands for an important trait that we encourage our members to “be”—Generous, Respectful, Encouraging, Accountable and Trustworthy.

The Be G.R.E.A.T. Values program is based on the U.S. Department of Education’s PBIS (Positive Behavioral Interventions & Supports) Model. PBIS is a positive, proactive approach to dealing with children’s behavior. Club members are given a clear set of expectations and rewarded with positive reinforcement as they meet those expectations. The model has proven effective as we have seen a decrease in Club disruption since implementing the Be G.R.E.A.T. Values.

The PBIS model is also used within the Washoe County School District, thus providing our youth with a consistent and positive message of responsibility and citizenship throughout their day—at school, after school and on school breaks.
