“It’s all about the kids” is a mantra frequently heard around the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows (BGCTM). If you have seen the effort the Board of Directors and BGCTM staff put into making the Club run the way it does, you know there is a lot of truth to that statement. Individually and collectively, they make it their mission to make the Truckee Meadows a stronger community by providing a safe place where every child in our community has an opportunity to learn, grow, thrive, and excel. But, a recent change around the BGCTM has added a significant, new element to how the Club is helping build a stronger Truckee Meadows.
About five years ago, the Board of Directors and BGCTM staff recognized a need to encourage more young professionals in our community to become engaged in philanthropy. So, the BGCTM partnered with the Young Professionals Network to create what is now called the Young Leaders Committee (YLC). For a lack of better terminology, the YLC is a junior board of directors for the BGCTM and has quickly become a training ground that exposes young professionals to the world of philanthropy.
The members of the YLC are extremely thankful to the Board of Directors and the BGCTM staff for their willingness to take us in and give us our own opportunity to learn, grow, thrive, and excel. And, we can only hope that the contributions the YLC makes to the BGCTM’s mission of making the Truckee Meadows a stronger community are comparable to the valuable experience the members of the YLC are gaining by serving as members of the BGCTM family.
