50 Years Anniversary Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows

Timeline

  • 1976

    Founding of the Truckee Meadows Boys’ Club

    • First clubhouse opens near Terminal Way & East Plumb Lane, Reno.
    • Executive Director: John Bodger.
    • Boxing program begins under Ray & Thelma Tavares’ leadership.

    1979 – Boys Club Week is celebrated

    • A weeklong event full of activities for kids and families.
  • 1980s

    1980 — First Cioppino Feed & Auction

    1981 — East Ninth Street Clubhouse Opens 

    • Club moves into its permanent home on East Ninth Street.
    • BGCTM begins serving meals to youth (first year of food service).

    1982 — Boys Club adopts annual Youth of the Year program from BGCA

    1983 — Boys Club Becomes Boys & Girls Club 

    • Girls were officially allowed to attend the Club
    • The organization officially changes its name; the logo is updated.
    • Jim Barrett, Director of the Boys & Girls Club of Truckee Meadows from 1983 to 1988, issued the very first Club jackets to Board members in 1984

    1984 — First Woman Appointed to Board 

    • Vicky Loose becomes the first female Truckee Meadows Boys & Girls Club board member and is still serving today.

    1989 — Boys & Girls Club recognizes Youth of the Year

    1989-1994 — Bob Jackson served as Executive Director

  • 1990s

    1994 — East Ninth Street Facility Expands 

    • Large gym added to what would later become the Donald W. Reynolds (DWR) Facility.

    1994-2005 — Mo Kachurak served as Executive Director

    1996 — Ballers Basketball Program Launches 

    • Bill Ballinger establishes the long-running, iconic Ballers program.

    1998 — Reviglio Teen Center Outdoor Area Developed 

    • First dedicated teen outdoor programming space at East Ninth.

    1999 — Two New Sites 

    • Neil Road Clubhouse opens.
    • BGCTM launches a program site on the TMCC campus.
  • 2000s

    2004 — Donald W. Reynolds Facility Opens 

    • East Ninth Street doubles in size, expanding into the 80,000 sq. ft. Donald W. Reynolds Facility, serving thousands.

    2005 — Leadership Transition 

    • Mike Wurm becomes CEO

    2005 — Hug High School Teen Program Launches 

    • First high school–based teen program.

    2008 — Fernley School Sites Begin 

    • BGCTM expands into Lyon County through school-based sites.

    2008 — First Early Learning Center Opens 

    • E.L. Wiegand Early Learning Center on Foster Drive opens for infants through age 5.
  • 2010s

    2010 — “It Just Takes One” Campaign Begins 

    • Launch of IJTO annual giving campaign.

    2011 — Boys & Girls Club Young Leadership Committee (YLC) established

    • New Lemmon Valley Clubhouse opens.

    2013 — Family PLUS Program Established 

    • Offering family support by way of counseling, mental health referrals, food & supplies pantry, parenting classes, and holiday support.

    2014 — Major Facility Growth + ELC Renovation 

    • E.L. Wiegand ELC reopens after significant upgrades.
    • Former YMCA on Foster Dr. becomes the new William N. Pennington Youth & Teen Center.

    2016–2017 — Donald L. Carano Youth & Teen Facility Opens 

    • The Project Solutions building on Bresson Avenue undergoes a full remodel.
    • Soft opening 2016 with grand opening in 2017 of the Carano Facility

    2017 — BGCTM expands to rural Nevada 

    • BGCTM launches school-based sites in Ely.
    • 36,000 sq. ft. Winnemucca Clubhouse opens — first rural clubhouse.

    2019 — Two New Early Learning Centers Open 

    • Johnson Family Early Learning Center opens.
    • Our Place Early Learning Center opens on the Our Place campus.
    • BGCTM partners with Mater Academy Charter School on the East Ninth campus.
    • Early Learning Center opens on Reno Ave.
  • 2020s

    2020 — Pandemic Response 

    • BGCTM not only remains open for the children of essential workers, but also extends its daily hours and operates seven days a week.
    • Distance learning labs, STEM Bus, and Fitness Bus deployed.

    2023 — Major Rural Expansion + Two New ELCs 

    • Estelle J. Kelsey ELC opens on West 6th Street, Reno.
    • Nevada Gold Mines ELC opens in Winnemucca.
    • Lovelock site opens in Pershing County.
    • Tonopah site opens in Nye County.
    • BGCTM rescues eight new school sites

    2024 — Continued Early Learning Growth 

    • Yamada Family ELC opens on El Rancho Drive in Reno.
    • Murray Street ELC opens in Ely.

    2025 — New Fernley Community Response and Resource Center Opens

    • This 18,000-square-foot facility operates as a full-service clubhouse, complete with classrooms, a teen center, a game room, a commercial kitchen, and more.

    2026 — 57 locations across six counties

    • Groundbreaking on new Early Learning Center in Eureka.
    • Groundbreaking on new Early Learning Center in Fernley.
